Vulval Oil v Oil-based lubricant: Which is best for vaginal dryness?

For many women that suffer from vaginal dryness it can bring about significant changes, both physically and emotionally. This condition can lead to irritation and a burning sensation, day-to-day discomfort and pain during sexual activity. This can make intimacy difficult, which in turn has a knock on effect into relationships. Fortunately, there are products designed to ease these symptoms, but it can be confusing to choose the right one. To ease the discomfort of vaginal dryness and help with creating a comfortable sexual experience, what type of product would be best? Oil-based personal lubricants or vulval oils, each serving different purposes in managing vaginal dryness.

In this blog, we will explore the differences between vulval oil and oil-based lubricants, focusing on their benefits, the differences and how to use them, particularly for women dealing with vaginal dryness and the effects of menopause.

What is vaginal dryness and how does it affect women during menopause?

Vaginal dryness is a condition where the vagina is not creating sufficient lubrication that the sensitive musical membranes need to keep them soft and protected. This lack of natural lubrication can cause discomfort, irritation and for some severe pain, making day-to-day activities difficult never mind sexual intercourse. This is a common symptom for women going through menopause due to a decrease in oestrogen levels, which affects the natural lubrication process and thinning of the vaginal tissue. Vaginal dryness can also be caused by factors such as changes in hormone levels post-partum, before menstruation or other medical conditions.

What is an Oil-Based Personal Lubricant?

Oil-based personal lubricants are designed to help reduce friction during sexual activity. Unlike water-based lubricants, which are absorbed by the body quickly, oil-based lubricants provide long-lasting glide and smoothness. This makes them particularly helpful for women who experience vaginal dryness, as they can facilitate comfortable, pain-free intercourse.

Using a personal lubricant that is free from harsh chemicals and preservatives is important, find a natural lubricant that is formulated to minimise the risk of allergies. As there is already discomfort in the vagina, we wouldn’t want to cause any more harm. Natural oils and waxes are well-known for their moisturising and soothing properties. Combining with other ingredients that will provide a smooth, slick texture that enhances sexual pleasure. Making an oil-based lube an ideal option for women experiencing vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex.

Another advantage of oil-based lubricants is that they are long-lasting on the skin and are versatile. They are often used not only for vaginal dryness but we have seen many women applying an oil-based lubricant on top of their vaginal moisturiser to protect from friction from underwear or when playing sport or swimming.

However, it’s important to note that oil-based lubricants are not compatible with latex condoms. The oil can degrade the latex material, increasing the risk of condom breakage. If you're using condoms, you might want to opt for a water-based lubricant. However, they can be used with silicone sex toys and be enjoyed with water play or used as a massage oil, making it a great all-rounder for your bedside table.

What is Vulval Oil?

Unlike oil-based lubricants, which are designed to be used during sexual activity, vulval oils are products intended for external use on the vulva only. The vulva is the outer part of the female genitalia not the internal vaginal canal. Vulval oils are typically used to nourish and soothe dry external tissue.
Some vulval oils are made from plant-based ingredients, which are commonly used for their calming, anti-inflammatory and moisturising properties. These oils can help soothe irritation and reduce inflammation in the vulva, providing relief from discomfort caused by dryness.
While vulval oils can be used to moisturise and protect the vulva, they are not designed to be used during sexual intercourse as a lubricant or within the vagina at all. Instead, they are part of a skincare routine pre-sex meant to soothe dryness to the external genitals.

Key Differences Between Vulval Oil and Oil-Based Lubricant

#1 Purpose:

 - Oil-Based Lubricant: Primarily used during sex to reduce friction, improve comfort and enhance pleasure. It adds glide and helps alleviate pain during intercourse due to vaginal dryness.

 - Vulval Oil: Intended for external use on the vulva to soothe and moisturise. It is not designed for use during sexual activity.

#2 Vaginal care:

 - Oil-Based Lubricants: Nurtures and protects intimate health relieving all vaginal dryness

 - Vulval Oils: Cannot be applied inside of the vagina

#3 Longevity

 - Oil-Based Lubricant: Long-lasting glide

 - Vulval Oils: Short-term relief

#4 Use During Intercourse:

 - Oil-Based Lubricant: Perfect for use during sexual activity, with silicone vibrators or solo. Can also be used as a massage oil and if enjoying water-play. It’s especially helpful for women experiencing painful sex.

 - Vulval Oil: Not meant for sexual use. Vulval oils are intended as a soothing treatment for the external genital area. They do not offer the same kind of lubrication needed for intercourse.

#5 Compatibility:

 - Oil-Based Lubricants: Not compatible with latex condoms, as oils can break down latex and increase the risk of condom failure. Can be used with sex toys, dilators and menstrual cups.

 - Vulval Oil: Since it is not intended for use during intercourse, vulval oils are not an issue for condom compatibility.

The importance of plant-based ingredients in vulval oils and oil-based lubricants

As women increasingly seek products that are organic, natural and free from synthetic chemicals, plant-based ingredients have become a popular choice in both vulval oils and oil-based lubricants. Natural oils make them excellent choices for sensitive skin. These oils moisturise and soothe, while also providing anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

When choosing products to manage vaginal dryness it’s important to prioritise those made with high-quality, natural, plant-based ingredients as they are safer and less likely to irritate sensitive skin.

Conclusion

Both oil-based lubricants and vulval oils have their unique roles in alleviating the discomfort that comes with vaginal dryness, especially during menopause. If you're seeking relief during sexual activity, oil-based personal lubricants offer the glide and moisture necessary for a more comfortable and pleasurable experience. On the other hand, vulval oils are ideal for nourishing and soothing the external genital area as a topical booster when applying as part of an everyday self-care routine.

By understanding the differences between these two products and choosing options with plant-based ingredients you can make an informed decision that best suits your needs. Whether you're dealing with vaginal dryness or simply want to care for your skin during menopause, both vulval oil and oil-based lube can play an important role in maintaining comfort, health, and intimacy.
